How Can I Learn Traditional Flower Pressing?

The process of traditional flower pressing uses pressure, absorbent paper and time, to turn fresh flowers into preserved specimens that can last for hundreds of years. Flowers are placed between layers of paper (blotting paper works best) within a wooden flower press that has bolts that are tightened to apply pressure to the flowers. The paper removes the moisture whilst the pressure from the flower press flattens them, and after three weeks the flowers will have fully dried out and can then be used in a variety of different craft projects. It’s a beautiful, calming process and a wonderful way to connect with nature.

If you’d like to learn the art of traditional flower pressing, I can help. I’ve been busy writing a mindful, seasonal book all about flower pressing; The Pressed Flower Handbook will teach you my sustainable, natural flower pressing techniques and also provide you with examples of inspiring projects for creating with your pressed flowers. It’s a book led by nature, featuring gorgeous images of the Meadow and Thyme garden, some tips on gentle gardening and the best flowers to grow for pressing, alongside step-by-step guides for pressing flowers and creating with them. The Pressed Flower handbook will be released in May 2026 and is available now for pre-order from all good bookstores. You can also find lots of inspiration on my social media pages - follow Meadow and Thyme on Instagram and Facebook for regular posts about flower pressing, gardening and seasonal slow-living.

For a fully immersive experience, you can join me for a Traditional Flower Pressing Masterclass at the stunning Netherwood Estate. It’s a day full of magic, peace and joy. In the morning I’ll teach you my flower pressing techniques and lots of tips and tricks, before you get to explore the incredible Manor House gardens and pick flowers to place in a Meadow and Thyme flower press that is yours to keep.
